ABB Transmissions and Distribution Ltd

Problem

To meter and mix a reactive two component epoxy with a mix ratio by volume of 1 to 5. The epoxy had a gel time of 90 minutes. After mixing, the material was poured down into a tube, totally encapsulating a sectionalisor used in outdoor, high voltage transmission cables. This was a very messy process. As the run sizes were small, a high cost meter mix machine was uneconomical.

Previous Method
  • Measure each component of the epoxy in plastic jars, then hand mix in a jar with a pouring lip.
  • Pour approximately 120 ml of material down a tube, containing the sectionaliser, ensuring that it was totally encapsulated.
Solution
  • Ratio-Pak Two Component Cartridges in 150:750 ml mix ratio and Static Mixers.
  • Air Operated Bi-Mixer Applicator.
  • Filling of Cartridges by Svenic.
Benefits
  • Ensures that the correct mix ratio of 1 to 5 is being adhered to.
  • A reduction in wastage and clean up
  • A reduction in the time to apply the material.
  • More accurate placement of material.
  • A reduction in the cost per unit.
  • Observes Occupational Health & Safety practices
  • Eliminates safety risks.
  • Eliminates air entrapment of material caused by hand mixing.
  • Increased convenience as cartridges are prefilled.
Customers Comments

For a number of years we had been mixing the material in plastic cooking jugs purchased from the local supermarket and mixing the material with a wooden coffee stick.

This of course, led to the problem that sometimes the material was spilt down the side of these units and had to be cleaned away. Also, more material was being mixed than was required.

The previous application certainly was not one that should be used in our type of factory, where we observe strict OH & S practices. As such, we sought the help of an engineer who put us in touch with Svenic.

We have developed a system where by we have assembled a number of these units on a trolley. The units are wheeled under the static mixer. The operator then simply activates the applicator. The material is fed into the tube, encapsulating the electronic sectionalisors.

CUSTOMER TRAINING

Whilst exhibiting at the World of Concrete in Singapore last year, personnel from Sika Malaysia and Sika Singapore took the opportunity to update their knowledge on the Svenic range of equipment and services. A number of questions, problems and answers were discussed, with both Svenic and Sika personnel leaving with considerably more knowledge. Shortly after the training session, Sika Singapore was the first Sika company in South East Asia to introduce the Svenic Crack Injection System into its range. Our readers are no doubt aware, training is important to all businesses, so if you would like a member of our staff to attend your next sales meeting or  product training session, please contact our Sales Department.

CRACK INJECTION DEMONSTRATION
A HIGHLIGHT AT WORLD OF CONCRETE

The World of Concrete in Singapore drew exhibitors and attendees from all over South East Asia. Willie Kay of Wak Consultants - without doubt one of the most knowledgeable experts in Crack Injection in the Region, presented three Crack Injection methods at the show. Svenic, was indeed fortunate, that Willie chose the Svenic Crack Injection System as one of his preferred injection methods. Willie was particularly impressed with the convenient and low cost method of injecting cracks in concrete. His presentation was very well attended and the Svenic Crack Injection system received considerable interest. The use of twin cartridges and static mixing to meter and mix the epoxy ensures the quality of the mixed material. It also increases user convenience and productivity, when coupled with our manual or air guns. Above all, the patented crack injection flange is low cost and easy to use, whilst enhancing safety.

We are extremely happy with the system. It works very well and has helped us get over a rather outdated way of using the epoxy. For us, there has also been a saving of time and we have actually increased the efficiency in this section of production.
